first days

Time for another school year to begin.  This mama is actually looking forward to getting back into a weekly routine with regular bedtimes.

The girlchild is starting her last year at elementary school.  She's got a fantastic teacher and they will be learning Nevada History this year.

Burrito got the teacher he wished for but none of his best buddies.  The good news is there is still recess and a chance to make new friends too.  p.s. don't let Bob's face fool you...he's wicked excited about school.  Just thinks he's too cool to smile for mama.

As for me, I'm patiently waiting to hear how the first day went and hoping the kids love their first day of school presents I left on their beds this morning!

So How Was Your Day?

Hey Bob, how come you haven't brought home any crafts from school yet?

I'm in kindergarten now mom.  We do MATH not crafts.

Well...we did do one craft today.  But it was just with crayons.

And then there were two in school

This year we had two first day of school pictures.  Unfortunately the camera man had to leave in a hurry this morning so we weren't quite put together and the pictures are a smidge blurry.  But we remembered and that's all the matters right?

Say right :)

First up, the girlchild.  Who still wanted to be a zoologist up until yesterday when she decided a scientist would be equally as good.  Apparently we took pictures in front of the door last year...so there goes that plan.  But at least you can tell Emmers grew a little since last year.

And then there was Burrito.  Who is so ridiculously excited to be going to school just like his big sister he didn't even want me to walk him to the door.  Don't worry Mom, he says, I got this!

Bob's sign says he wants to be a ninja someday....naturally.

Always something surprising

She's not done coloring yet

Me: Hey Emmers, what are you working on?

Oh, I'm just drawing van Gogh's Starry Night.

Me: From Memory?

Well, Mrs. Nelson brought in a couple pictures last week.

Not bad for a 6 year old.

Not your average Monday

What to do on a vacation day when you still have to take the girlchild to school?

You go by quad of course.  Leave early enough to have time to explore and pack a picnic lunch for 3.

You take the back roads behind Hazen and alongside Lahontan to end up at the Girlchild's school, just in time for class to start.

You stop to admire the wildlife appropriately.

You photo document your first time at Diversion Dam.

You let the girlchild eat her lunch in tree, because they just don't make trees like this in our neighborhood anymore.

The first of many

Growing up, my mother used to look so forward to the first day of school and getting some piece and quiet from the 5 of us, that it was like Christmas.

There were made to order breakfasts and gifts under our pillows when we returned from school that day.  Even the kids looked forward to it.  Long into our college years we would remind our dear mother that school was starting and we should be rewarded for being such good studies.

This week, the girlchild started Kindergarten.  As excited for her as I am, I wish I still have a few more years of school-less children to take random middle of the year vacations with and not worry about what they are missing in school.  Soon she'll be reading and writing and doing complex math and I'll be saying, I don't remember how to do this or that, it's been soooo long.

A good friend told me how she took first day of school pictures with her boys so they could see how they grew and changed each year.  So, here is my first, first day of school with my kids picture, many, many more to follow:
