chugging away

Now that all the clocks have been turned back for winter, I find myself out of daylight to run sprints after work.  You will find me bright and early on Sunday mornings at the track...still chipping away at my new year's resolutions.

Four seconds and 7 weeks to get my mile time under 7 minutes....

2013 Goals

The push this year is for accountable goals instead of vague resolutions.
And my push is for a short and achievable list.

Here it goes:

1. Run again.

I feel like this one needs to be vague, but I'll try to make it as specific as possible.  I want to run again.  The doctor said that between 4 and 6 months I could start trying to jog short distances.  I AM registered for the 2013 Reno Tahoe Odyssey again (it's at the end of May).  So I guess that's the ultimate time goal.  I'm hoping to be able to run a 10K distance by the rock n river weekend (early May).  I think this might just be the opportunity I was looking for to get Emma to be my running buddy.  I will have to do lots of run/walking in the beginning and she could keep pace with me if she wanted to.

2. Be a more consistent FIT class student.

At least twice a week, every week.

3. Reclaim Sundays as lazy, stay home days.

I'm sure laundry will still happen but I intend to spend more time with those I love most whether it be movies, board games, or going on adventures outside somewhere together.

2012 in Review

How did the resolutions go?  I won some and lost some I think.

1. Go fishing - I fished a bit in my own state (probably not enough to cover the cost of the trout stamp but hey) and I caught a king salmon in Alaska...that should count for something.
2. Teach Emma to finger knit - I think we have finger knitting down now.  Emma can make a 3 inch wide scarf for days and days.  We briefly attempted crocheting, I think that might be the ticket to moving on to something a little bit more challenging, something like hot pads perhaps.

3. Keep on Running - Running came to a screeching halt at the end of September, but I had some pretty great races before that and set a new PR for both the 5K and the half marathon.  And I logged nearly 500 miles this year.  I still have a lot of physical therapy to go before I'll be able to run again, but it's still on my list of things to do.  With the amount of cartilage damage I did to my knee I will have to aim for quality runs over quantity of miles.
4. Learn how to whistle - Getting better at the whistle I do have, except not any louder...not sure what needs to change for that.
5. Take more field trips: Two specifically are on the list: Hidden Caves and Berlin Ichthyosaur Park. Hidden caves...not done.  But hiking is on the approved list of activities post surgery so that will definitely get checked off next year.  Berlin happened.  We had a good time, my brother and older sister even came out for the weekend.  It was nice having them at the museum.  I would not have noticed all of my family's signatures on the opening day plaque or the pictures of my grandmother on the museum walls had they not been there.

I went to the mudder

And she bested me.  But I had such a great time getting my booty kicked.
Here are just a few pictures of the day.  I'm off to shower and scrub the gravel out of my elbows.

That's me in red, assessing the ring situation.  I assessed poorly.
 Ended up swimming.

Halfway done.  Yay!

Some of American Savage.
It's only pipes filled with water and barbed wire above, no big deal.

Quick photo break

Still have a little more scrubbing to do on my number.  Can you tell which knee is swollen?

Even though I didn't get to finish the course (I buckled my knee on obstacle #14 at mile 8) I accomplished quite a bit and am happy.  Plus I got to ride in the medical vehicle down the mountain and have hot chocolate with the EMTs. Experiencing a little bit of the behind the scenes action of the race.  I think the EMT girl could tell I was frustrated and trying not to cry, she drew me the sweetest, sharpie heart across the tape of my knee bandage.  It's the little things in life.

Should the opportunity arise again, you can be I'll be settling the score with the Tough Mudder!

First one standing in line

Summer is coming.....never mind that it's snowing outside as I type this.

Looking forward to
tan lines
snow cones
cotton candy
tent camping
back porch sitting
a tall glass of sun tea
running through the sprinklers
growing the garden
thunder storms
watermelons
slip-n-slides
fishing trips
BBQ ribs

Can't. Hardly. Wait.

in 2011 I'm going to.....

In 2011, I'm going to run a 10K.

In 2011, I'm going to run a half marathon.

In 2011, I'm going to go back to daily reflections (because on some idle day in September, I know this book is going to tell me to clean my linen cupboard and I need that in my life).

In 2011, I'm going to read 100 books of my choosing.

in 2011, I'm going to work harder on the letting go of things I can't control.  Life's too short to be worried about that kind of stuff anyway, right?

Reflections

This is the one where I tell you how I did on my 2010 resolutions.....

1. Take better care of myself....Umm, who let me start with this one, I say yes so yes!

2. Become a creme brulee master....Let's see:  I ate creme brulee at every restaurant opportunity I got, Lawrence made creme brulee in my kitchen while I sat at the counter and took notes, but I still don't technically have my own ramekins or torch yet....

3. Run 100 miles total this year.....drum roll please.....and the number is....182 miles.
