When I was ONE, I had just begun

When I was TWO, I was nearly new

When I was THREE, I was hardly me

When I was FOUR, I was not much more

When I was FIVE, I was just alive

But now I am SIX, I'm as clever as clever.  So I think I'll be six now for ever and ever.

I let the birthday girl enjoy her day.  Tomorrow I'll start my nagging to quit growing up so fast.

Of Bees and Mist

Sometimes a book lands on my to read list and gets stuck there for a while.  For one of many reasons, life being too busy, lack of time, I need to finish the book club book first (which I haven't yet...and we meet tomorrow....crappers!), not available at the library, etc.  There are times when a book has been on my list so long I can't really remember why I wanted to read it in the first place.  Of Bees and Mist apparently is one of those.  I was so excited the day I found it on the library shelf.  But as I got farther in the book I started to wonder why the heck I had wanted to read it in the first place.

So I went back and looked for a summary online.  Of Bees and Mist doesn't have a wiki page yet (I was bummed to find out).  If I had to describe it in a sentence or two I would call it a cautionary tale of scorned spouses, difficult-delivery babies, and conniving mother-in-laws.

There are more twists and turns in the plot than any book I've read in some time.  I found myself rushing to finish because I was doing a horrible job of predicting what was going to happen next.  I usually have the ending figured out before I finish a book.  Not this one.  If you are looking for not-your-average-story this might be a good one for you.

All while reading Of Bees and Mist, I was sure that it would end up on my did not like list.  But after having finished it and a day or two passed and I had some time to mull the entire story over, I found I really did enjoy it.  It kept my attention the whole time, the characters are one I will not forget, and I enjoyed the ending.

You should read it now, and we can discuss what you think about it.

Sunday Morning

I took my mom to pick out new rose bushes for Mother's day.  It's hard work wandering through the nursery, choosing colors, and picking plants that have a nice fragrance.

Bob wandered off to find some of his favorite kind of people.  I found him sitting with strangers, drinking orange juice, and discussing the amount of hair each one had hiding under their cowboy hats.

Rock n River Half Marathon

I have been logging more miles this year than any other year so far.  And so, I had my hopes set on a new half marathon PR.

Last October I ran the Bizz Johnson half (which is billed as super fast and mostly downhill) in 2 hr 20 mins.
I was ill prepared and didn't regulate my blood sugar well and I was feeling it when I finished the race.

Enter the rock-n-river half marathon to redeem myself.

Under the Reno Arch

The long story:
I couldn't find my peeps before the line up so there I was standing amongst strangers feeling like a dork...it was my first Disneyland half marathon all over again.

I borrowed some one's garmin watch for this race and it is quite possibly smarter than I am.  I had my eye on a couple of the Fallon Kaia girls, who I intended to use as my pace guides (because I secretly wanted to beat them...you know).  But I fumbled getting the garmin-that-wasn't-mine set after the gun and by the time I looked up they were nowhere to be seen.

Within the first quarter mile I had found TWO of the girls from my Reno Tahoe Odyssey relay team.  We ran together for a couple of miles, keeping the pace slow and catching up on life.

And then some guy dropped his iphone and it exploded into 3 pieces.  He picked up the phone part but not the battery or the shatter case.  Me being the good samaritan jogged back and retrieved it from the water puddle it had fallen into.

Mile 5, pretty sure I won't be able to make this whole thing without stopping, so I stopped to pee.  It probably took me 3 minutes.  I'm guessing.

And I lost my running buddies.

So I cranked up the music and found my own pace.

As Baz Luhrmann would tell you:

The race is long.  In the end it is only with yourself.

Finish line smiles.

The joke of the day:

I got the silver medal.

(Because all the medals were silver.)

Stats: 315th overall
76th in age group
Chip time: 2:09:25

Next month: The Reno Tahoe Odyssey...it's going to be awesome!

just a practice run for team disco velveeta

But I was having so much fun

Emma: Mom, you know that door in me mere's (grandma's) hall.  The one next to the door to my room.  The one with the big lock on the the handle.

Me: Yes

Emma: What's behind that door

Me:  That's where me mere keeps her skeletons.

Emma: Oh, cool.  That's where she keeps her Halloween decorations and her costumes.

Me:  No, skeletons.  Actual skeletons.

Bob: Gross!  Me mere keeps dead bodies in there??

Me:  No silly.  Skeletons are just bones.

Bob: I bet me mere glued eyeballs onto the skeletons!

Emma:  I bet me mere has dog bones in there!

Me: She probably does.

Emma: ......I'm going to ask me mere about this.

(The Truth:  It's the door to the furnace.  It's had a kiddie lock on it for as long as I can remember)

Some kids have imaginary friends...

My kid has a monkey leash.  Kind of the same but with possibly higher therapy bills later in life.

CCHS Construction Club 5K

It's been a while since I've raced in a 5K.  Almost 2 years.  But when a newbie runner asked if I'd run with her because she was nervous I said of course.

I finished in 26:43

Pretty excited about that time,  It's a minute and half faster than my last one.
I ended up getting 2nd in my age group and now I have a new 5K best.
This PR came without medals, ribbons, or awards....but I'll take it!
That's me in the middle....the only one without a fancy sign to hang above my bed :)

Bob's opinion of the zoo

I just love that kid...even when he makes crazy faces.

Hey Bob, what do you think of the zoo?

Well, Mom, I'm really just in it for the candy and the toy you're going to get me at the gift shop.
